The innovative Meinklang estate’s top red from biodynamic Saint Laurent grapes is vinified with indigenous yeasts only, and then carefully matured in 900 litre concrete egg shaped vessels which capture the pure varietal character of the grape. The very fine and numerous air pores in the concrete allow a specially controlled oxygen supply to the wine, and the unique purely natural oval shape aids unobstructed, free flow and circulation of the developing wine. Indeed, on the palate it is silky smooth with extremely fine tannins and the flavours are jammy and intense with hints of liquorice, soy and spice.‘This one is out there: biodynamic, vinified using wild yeasts in concrete ‘eggs’. Involving and inviting spice and meatiness on the nose with an exotic, incense note and very nice black fruit at its core. On the palate it has sweet, silky fruit, but it is cloaked in tannin and dark, espresso-like concentration with a long, bone dry and gently spicy finish. Intriguing and delicious too, and with those tannins probably one to cellar for a few years.’ 92 points, The Wine Gang (2009 vintage)Wine of the Month March 2013 – Tom Cannavan’s Wine Pages (2009 vintage)
