Gonzalo Rodríguez - Dominio Del Carabo
I recently discovered the wines of Dominio Del Carabo a few months ago in my local wine shop.
They were immediately accessible wines with bucket loads of freshness but a complexity around them that gave them so much character.
Based in the Rioja region and producing great quality wines in minuscule volumes, the winery is run by young winemaker Gonzalo Rodriguez and it was immediately evident where the wine's character comes from.
We're hugely grateful that Gonzalo took the time out to answer our 'Meet Your Maker' questions
Your full name and job title
Gonzalo rodriguez - owner and multitasker
How long have you been making wine ?
I´ve been making Wines for 4 years.
Tell us a bit about the winery and your location
Currently im making my Wines in a small warehouse in Hormilla, Rioja alta. The Project totals 108.000 bottles per year. These 108.000 bottles come from 9 different special vineyards (one vineyard, one wine)
These Wines are elaborated in small cement and stainlesssteal tanks and french oak barrels of 225 and 500 litres.
What varietals do you grow and which is your favourite?
I grow White tempranillo , malvasía, viura and this year as well White grenache. And for the red grapes tempranillo, grenache, mazuelo and graciano.
My prefered grape is grenache, beacause it is the finest and most elegant grape to me.
How would you explain your wine making style?
I like the fresh, light, long and fruity Wines. Because of this I try to make the wine that I enjoy
How did you get into wine-making?
I was working in a financial department in a winery five years ago. There met a winemaker who taught me about Good wine and how important it is to have old or Good vineyards for making them.
After I left my work and started to find Good and old vineyards around Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa.
I prefer old vineyards but if the Young vineyard have a Good altitude and/or Good orientation then they are very interesting for making Good Wines.
What is your desert island wine if you could only pick one wine? (Can’t be your own!)
If I were on a desert ireland maybe I would only drink wáter!! 😉 whatever wine from a small Good producer, the country or región is not important for me.
Who do you most admire in the wine industry ?
I admire my father, he worked in the industry as a sales/marketing manager.
But currently maybe Ferrer Bobet
Your favourite wine growing region (apart from your own!)
All of them are Good, but maybe my favourite is Bierzo or Priorat in spain and Mendoza-Argentina for red Wines, but for White Wines Chablis-Borgoña and champagne
One bit of advice you would give to aspiring winemakers
They must to transmit there own personality in there wine trying to respect the vineyard and the wine that comes from the vineyard
